On Goal Setting and Updates

How a freelancer is building her 'work' while panicking about it every day!

MEET TODAY’S GUEST

Nikita Gupta,
Remote Writer and Struggler

Nikita is a remote content and newsletter writer who has been freelancing since April 2024 while panicking about the next goal or the next client, or the next meal.

After years of waiting for motivation, she decided to take things into her hands and started goal setting, slowly but surely, while asking her friends to keep her accountable.

Today, she shares insights on her 2025 goals, progress, and managing 100 other side projects at the same time.

Hey there!

You’re reading another experiment of mine, where I found this interview style template. I thought it would be awesome, to talk about myself in third person and hopefully give you more insights.

THE INTERVIEW

When did you ditch waiting and start your anxious goal-sprint?

Since quitting my job, I’d say. As many people already know, I gave myself two months to ‘test’ freelancing, and luckily, I secured two clients during this period, which motivated me to continue.

I know for a fact that I can’t stick to one mundane activity; I need purpose, I need challenges. Probably that is the reason I couldn’t stay put in one job role for more than 10 months. So, to keep myself going, I started with a LinkedIn challenge. To have a new theme every month. It worked until I got used to it, I don’t do it anymore, but I keep looking for newer challenges elsewhere.

Work for at least one thing that challlenges/inspires you, cause cows also live the exact same life every singe day!

How do you juggle newsletters, clients, and daily panic?

Lol. The panic comes from juggling so many things at once. I work amazingly well when a deadline is close. Urgent work gives me panic, and probably that’s why I could never go into creating/managing social media content (except for myself, of course).

I do not PLAN my newsletters, the topics just come last minute, and I share things. Like for this edition, I did not have a concrete plan or idea until 8 pm on Thursday. Then I was mindlessly browsing through the templates, and the format suddenly clicked.

For the past 3 weeks, I have been working at 9 am. I’ve realised I am the most productive then. Then I look at my to-do lists, which keep spilling over to the next day, and work based on urgency and need.

Doing too many things doesn’t always mean being the most organised. It’s working on things when they feel right.

TODAY’S WORKDAY

Live from My Parents’ Bedroom, My Parents’ Home

When we sat down for this newsletter, Nikita had just come from spoiling her mom (took her shopping) and buying a few clothes for herself. She doesn’t go out much and her clothes are literally never worn, but she needed some things for a short trip she is planning soon.

She finished writing her everyday newsletter in the morning, drafted 2 blog outlines, and planned a short trip with her friends.

Now, she is just excited about next week :)

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MONTH

What 2025 win made you dance like this?

I think setting up my PayPal account and getting paid last night.

I had been waiting for it the whole day and was also kind of thinking it wouldn’t come, but it did! So Yay!

BLOOPERS

How MY Fickle Mind Works 😭

The topic I had in mind was Q2 recap and Q3 Goals. The above is the draft when I started writing this.

Then I went blank and started looking for some recap templates. Found this interview style one. Then I thought I could Q&A myself about my goals (lol, it was so difficult).

Then I gave ChatGPT the intro and asked it to ask me 5 questions, and I have tweaked and answered those.

Should I do a Q&A soon? I think it has been a while. If I get 10 yes’s (mail replies) will do it :)

Should

Now that we are shaken back to reality, here is a quick recap of my Q2 goals :)

✅ Close a client for writing newsletters
✅ Close a client for LinkedIn Ghostwriting
✅ Close an international client
✅ Revamp website/portfolio
✅ Get bylines on reputed sites (1)
✅ Start a LinkedIn Company Page
⚪ Explore Reddit
✅ Started a Community!
✅ Catch up on reading goal (15/15)
⚪ Take a family trip in June (probably in July)
✅ Find screen-free hobbies*
✅ Start a $5000 per month challenge

KEY: ⚪ Did not actively start

God! This feels good.

NEXT EDITION:

Q3 GOALS + UPDATE ON THE Q&A (IF ENOUGH PEOPLE REPLY) + A SNEAK PEEK OF SOMETHING I AM PLANNING.

The weather is cooler, my mind is clearer, and the panic is still ever lingering (in a good way)

Life’s good again :)

I wish you productive mornings and inspiring challenges.

Love,
Nikita
