Why NOT Work With Me (And Why It Worked)
A reverse psychology pitch that landed my first freelance client
Helloooooo!
Back in May when I started freelancing, I saw the founder of a content marketing agency was looking for a freelance content writer, and I knew he might have received many DMs.
So, I did something different.
I sent a reverse psychology email titled "Why NOT Work With Me."

He replied. We got on a call. I sent a paid sample, negotiated my rate, and closed the deal.

I posted about it on LinkedIn, and you all went crazy!
So, I’m sharing it here too.
(Because it’s easier to drop a link than dig through messages and send it to everyone individually.)
Quick context: This was back when I was hunting for my first client. If I had to do it again? I’d keep the approach the same—just tweak a few details.
Here goes.
Not a typical Freelance Writer
Hey!
You might have gotten 100s of DMs by now.
I'll tell you why to go with any one of them and not Me.
- They are from agencies, handling multiple clients
(might not be able to give their full attention to you).
- They might be working with Multiple clients
(affects the quality of work)
- Their day might be busy with tons of work.
(Might not be available for a call with you when you need).
Why Not work with me!
- I started freelancing full time this month
(have no clients right now, but have a track record for writing content for 4+ years now.
- You get a complete package
(from writing long form blogs to SM copies and captions and can help you with everything)
- I am looking to work with someone I can be proud to say was my first client (as a full time freelancer, so, i would give my 200%)
I'll share my portfolio across if this message stands out from the 100 DMs, you might have received.
Thanks!
And that’s it.
Simple, effective, and reverse psychology at its best.
